Bost Language Learning: Lesson One

This will be the page for Lesson One. Here's a synopsis for what it will be like.
Lesson One will be known as "Nice to meet you," and will teach the student all the things one would like to say when meeting someone who speaks Japanese.
Have you ever had the experience of meeting someone who doesn't speak English, and you find out they speak a language of which you know a few words? How exciting! I'm slowly learning Korean, and I get really excited when I meet someone who speaks Korean, but all I can say so far is "hello, thank you, I don't speak Korean, do you speak English?" and that's it. I can't even ask, "how are you?"
So that's the inspiration for this lesson. By the end of Lesson One, the student should be able to make pleasant small talk with a Japanese-speaking new acquaintance. The actual purpose of the words taught in Lesson One is to provide a foundation of basic conversational words and grammar to build upon for all future learning.

Welcome to Bost Language Learning. This site is the organizational space of my tutoring business. I teach beginner's to intermediate Japanese right now, but plan to have English and German classes in the future. My philosophy is, you can't learn a new language by attending a class once or twice a week. The more you immerse yourself in, and continually practice the target language, the easier it will be for your brain to automatically recall the words and phrases that you've learned. That's the reason for this website- to provide motivation for students to keep their brains working!
I teach classes in the Portland, Oregon area, with class sizes ranging from one person to a group of fifteen. I post assignments and schedules on this site, as well as the occasional quiz or game. Students can post their answers in the comments section of a particular post, and parents of younger students can post feedback about their students' progress. Check back often for updates, and thanks for visiting!

Current Assignments

Individual Tutoring Class
Adventures in Japanese Textbook:
Chapter 4 overview, workbook starred exercises.

Continue Hiragana and Katakana flash card practice.

Try to use a couple longer sentences with your parents. Remember how to say, "my sister does not speak Japanese very well, but my father speaks very well."

Findley Beginners Class
We've now learned a few more verbs, so parents, try asking your student to tell you what to do! In Simon Says, they've learned "please stand, please sit, please laugh, please dance." We'll keep adding more verbs as we go. They've also learned how to say if they like or dislike something. They should be able to count to at least ten now, and some of them can count to 20. We'll try to learn some simple writing next week.
